Since 2009, the Virginia Autism Project has been dedicated to advocating for policies that support autistic individuals and their families in Virginia. Working with our autism advocacy partners, dedicated volunteers including self-advocates and families work together to educate the members of the General Assembly about the impact the proposed legislation each session would have on autistic Virginians. Some laws have a disproportionately higher impact on autistic individuals compared to the general population due to differences in communication, sensory processing, social interaction, and support needs. Special areas of focus are criminal justice, disability rights and accommodations, healthcare and mental health policies, employment and workplace protections, guardianship and voting rights, housing and independent living, education support and social benefits.
